I agree with you, what is this sense of propriety but self-degrading...mind you I can't easily relate to the Aunt Jemima concept that your mom referred to but I agree that while I don't really know your mom she seems to be quite an impressive person. We all care far too much how we look but I think you (and I) are in a generation that is placing practicalism/comfort as a higher priority than past generations. Take it back far enough and you have corsets...nowadays most colleges are filled with sweatpants and big sweaters/shirts/sandals/etc. We may have decided on the whole that we just don't care, or that what matters is our personal happiness not how we are perceived - if so kudos to us. 1) Gabriela was a bitch and so she probably would have scorned you but merely cuz she was a bitch. You, of course, have nobody to impress but yourself and if you're happy in pijamas then wear them proudly.
