By happenstance i (almost literally) stumbled across my favorite coffee shop in Monterrey: Seeking out the reggae show at
ClanDestino last night (a successful meetup with couchsurfers and encounter with awesome helpful and fun locals), i turned about to notice the shop next door, with a brightly fluorescent lit sign reading "Tierra Libre". And that sign was the last indication i received that this place was at all aware of technological advances since the American 60's.
The place is gloriously bohemian: The walls are painted haphazardly with gorillas, mushrooms, and various other imagery, and decorated with provocative art reminiscent - screw it, exemplary - of the anti-establishment trends of the beatnik generation. Sofas, bean bags, and a mishmash of other soft objects clutter these walls amid the occasional plain wooden table, and in one corner sits a small library of philosophical and activist literature. Among the music i've heard tonight are various recordings by CCR and Bob Marley and several unexpectedly slow covers of Pink Floyd by female vocalists with soft jazz accompaniments.
Ah, bliss.
We fly back to Tri-Cities tomorrow, so Monday i return to focused work on my t****s with a hopeful surge in productivity following this week's comparative slump. One week shouldn't kill me. But, before i forget, i shall return to Monterrey within the next few years to reconnect with Mario, Lorenia, and the CSers, and to scale
the Saddle one day (like the badassest of discriminants that i am).
Meanwhile, while
Ikeda and Naruse is quite readable, i've been sorely lacking opportunities to read it; finally tonight i have some hours in a café and i've got mathematician's block - things just aren't sinking in. I have, at least, noticed that they do indeed deal in rc-graphs, at least in type A. Whether their technique can be interpreted as such in the other types remains for me to see. If it does, i will be very happy (yet regrettably also in somewhat more dire search of projects to follow the degree program).
I just can't type more. The very hot week has worn me down. Time to see how much more combinatorics i can handle before i begin to nod off.
Post Script: Yes, they do have a
website. The geeky fellow who introduced me to the place last night gave me the URL and clued me in to an easter egg among the MacBook keyboard commands. A fan of Macs, he claims to be, and congratulated me on my taste.
Give me the impetus of mathematical talent denigration and i'll shoot for a job as the token English speaking barista at a place like this. Dream on, Cory.
