Interesting photo. Reminds me of a Rorschach blot.
The Exile(d) is my new favorite blog.
I think i'm officially vain over my contributions to
Cafe Hunt. After all, i'm only the third major contributor to the database and have made (i think) a lot of good suggestions that i hope appear with the updated site design. But my cynical side is right - i'm using sites like this as excuses to get out more, either out of the house to a local shop or out of town for a conference or simply spontaneously. Why does coffee culture call to me so? Is this just an adolescent collecting binge overtaking my childhood cravings for more and diverse bouncy balls, rubber bands, and paper clips?
I noticed today that newer traffic lights seem to give a turn arrow to an oncoming lane after giving the full green to both opposing lanes, while older lights tend to give the green arrow first. I came up with an amusing explanation of this: Original traffic studies suggested that a more efficient overall traffic flow is achieved by giving turn arrows first; after all, once one turn lane is vacated the opposing main lane is then free to move before their own turn lane is finished, so if the flow is heavy from one direction this works in that direction's favor. But as rode rage proliferated traffic designers searched for ways to appease drivers, and one common complaint among them turned out to be that turn lanes always seem to get to go first, despite being "less important" or "marginal". So designers opted to sacrifice a bit of efficiency for the peace of mind of drivers too impatient to put up with impropriety. Would this really surprise anyone?
I just really have to get out of the habit of pitying people.
They're playing the Willy Wonka soundtrack! Everyone who grew up in the 80s knows that tidbit of Rachmaninoff. . . . Oh, maybe they're just playing Rachmaninoff. (Yes, i know it's actually Mozart or whomever.)
