It seems like one of those great ideas that everyone wishes everyone else would have more often: For a short period - say, one day - donate a token percentage of your profits - meh, a percentage of sales off three select items will do - to an apparently rather arbitrary charitable organization.

I really appreciated this entry. You've inspired me to check out the local coffee shops in Fairfax; any suggestions?

I'm so very glad that you appreciated it and were inspired! I wasn't really expecting any acknowledgments at all.

indiecoffeeshops refers me to a few in the Fairfax area:
  • COFFiHOUSE seems to have a lounge-like atmosphere and hosts local musicians; they serve Caribou Coffee, which works with TransFair and has a good record as far as i've traced.
  • I've been to Jammin' Java a few times, a darker, beatnik-meets-metal kinda place with no shortage of interesting music. I asked about their coffee last year, but all i remember is that they don't exclusively serve fair-trade.
  • The Soundry looks like a crazy-neat artistic venue in-the-making, so i'd keep an eye on them.
CafeHunt reviews a couple more:
  • Arax Cafe is an "exotic" family-run Armenian place with Armenian coffee (your guess is as good as mine) as well as the usual.
  • Stacy's Coffee Parlor serves Santa Lucia estate coffee; i don't know the supplier, but they lay claim to a lot of sustainability factors (shade-growing, direct purchasing from farmers, etc.), and this article gives me a very ( ... )
