Chapter 3
Lay slid into his seat at the lunch table gratefully. So far, his day had been perfect. He gets a break from his mother, Wu Fan didn’t try to talk to him in class, and Suho was absent.
“What’s got you in such a good mood?” Baek asked as he sat across from his friend. “You look like its Christmas.”
“My mom is visiting a friend for a few days, she won’t be back until late Sunday night.”
Baek grinned, “you know what that means, right?”
“Yes, I can finally catch up on my homework and sleep in peace.”
“Homework, really Lay?” His friend deadpanned, looking at the brunette incredulously. “That’s the best you can do?”
“What? You’re being shipped to your grandparents, so it’s not like I have someone to hang out with.”
Baekhyun’s reply was interrupted by a tray being tossed on the table and a grumbling giant sliding into the seat next to Lay. “What the hell is this, anyway?” The intruder asked as he motioned to the food in disgust. “I’ve seen ten day old carcasses that looked more appetizing.”
“Umm, Wu Fan, right?” Baek asked as he eyed the other carefully.
Lay was inching away from his classmate as he stared at him. They hadn’t spoken since yesterday, and to be honest, Lay would be happy never having another conversation with him. Everything about Wu Fan screamed danger and violence. The younger had enough of that in his life already, he didn’t need anymore.
“Yeah, and you are?” Lay grimaced at the hint of challenge in the older’s voice as he raised an eyebrow at Baek. This was not going to end well.
“You’re the one sitting at our table, so cut the attitude pretty boy, or leave.”
“Says the one wearing enough eyeliner to go toe to toe with any prissy bitch on the street corner.”
“Its guyliner thank you very much, and I’m not the one strutting around like some hotshot with a stick up his ass. I, at least, have class.”
By this time, they were both standing and leaning across the table, glaring at the other as their voices rose. Lay nervously glanced around, they were starting to attract everyone’s attention. “Umm, guys?”
“Tell you what, I’ll save you the trouble of buying more bitchliner and just turn your entire face a really nice purple and black. Then you can go to the spa and get your nails done with the girls.”
“Bitch, you can’t touch this perfection,” Baek smirked as he motioned at his face. “It’s way out of your league.”
Lay grabbed his bag and slowly backed away from the table. There was no stopping either of them, and he didn’t want to get caught in the crossfire. Just as he was turning to flee, a hand roughly grabbed him and pushed him back into his seat.
“We need to talk, so don’t go anywhere,” Wu Fan growled, his eyes still trained on the diva across from him.
“I-I really need to go,” the brunette stammered as he tried to pry the other’s hand off his wrist.
“Yah! Let him go, you freak!” Baekhyun screeched.
“I need him.”
“Whatever the hell for?”
“That’s my business, not yours.”
“He doesn’t need another Suho in his life, damn it. Let him go!”
“Don’t you dare compare me to that asshole. I’m not going to hurt him.”
“Then what the hell do you call that?” Baekhyun screamed as he pointed at his friend.
Wu Fan looked at the boy and his eyes widened slowly. Lay was quietly sobbing as he tried to pull his wrist free, tears streaming down his face. His hold had strengthened with his anger, and he knew Lay would have a nasty bruise later. When he let him go, the brunette cradled his injured wrist and turned away from him.
“Sorry,” Wu Fan mumbled as he took his seat and forced himself to calm down. “You alright?”
“Of course he’s not alright, you almost broke his wrist.” Baekhyun seethed as he came over to sit next to his friend. Carefully, he inspected the injury and tsked when Lay whined at having it touched. “Come on, I’m taking you to the nurse.” He picked up the other’s backpack and motioned for the brunette to lead the way.
“Lay,” Wu Fan’s voice was soft and his eyes worried, “that’s not what I meant to happen. I’m s-“
“Stay away from him,” the diva hissed before taking Lay’s other hand and gently pulling him away.
Wu Fan was absent for the rest of the day, much to Lay’s relief. He didn’t know if he could handle having the male around him at the moment. He didn’t think the older had meant to hurt him, but it confirmed his earlier thoughts. Wu Fan was dangerous.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Lay’s mother growled when he walked into the house. “I told you my friend was coming over, and neither of us want to deal with your useless ass.”
“But, you said you were going to her house.” Lay explained as he kept his eyes on the floor, trying to ignore the heavy stench of alcohol already filling the room.
“And leave you here to destroy my home? Hell no. Now get out, and don’t come back either. I don’t need some snot nosed brat fucking up my weekend.”
“Go where?” He flinched when she stepped closer and grabbed his arm, shoving him towards the door.
“I don’t care. Sleep under a bench, just as long as it’s not here.” She slammed the door in his face and flipped the lock.
Lay’s shoulders slumped as he stared at the door, hoping she would change her mind and let him in. Or at least give him a chance to grab a jacket and his backpack. After a minute, he sighed and headed towards a local café. He didn’t see how this day could get any worse.
“Hey Lay, what’s wrong?” The elderly owner asked as the teenager plopped down at one of the tables and buried his face in his arms.
“Just a long day.”
“You hungry? I’ve got a fresh piece of apple pie with your name on it.”
“No thanks,” Lay mumbled. A second later his stomach protested heavily, he had ended up skipping lunch, and he silently cursed his luck.
“Here.”
He looked up at the smell of something delicious, and glanced at the man as he placed a large piece of dessert in front of him. “On the house, so no excuses,” he said when Lay started to protest.
“Thanks,” the brunette mumbled. He took a large bite and moaned at the taste, the man made the best pie in the city. “I don’t remember the last time I had something this tasty.”
“Good. Now cheer up, the world’s never as dark as it seems.”
Lay nodded as he continued to enjoy his meal, ignoring his problems for the moment. He stayed and talked with the owner for several hours. When the café was full and the workers were busy, he would lend a hand cleaning tables and carrying orders to customers. At the end of the night, he received a hot meal and a few dollars as thanks. The owner was used to him hanging out when his mother was in one of her moods, and had taken it upon himself to see the boy was at least fed.
When the café closed it was dark outside and he was back on the street with nowhere to go. Baek was out of town, and he didn’t have any other friends or relatives in the area. Lost in his thoughts, he found himself wandering along the side of the woods. A flash of memory stopped him as he glanced at the trees. A small path leading into the wilderness was barely visible.
Hesitating for a minute, he finally shrugged and decided to follow the trail. The darkness increased the further he walked, the tall trees blocking the moon. Ten minutes later and he came upon a small clearing where the sides of the path were obstructed by thick bushes. A pair of fierce red eyes flashed in his mind, making him wince as more memories tried to surface.
A sudden rustling startled him, making him spin around and take a step back. He froze when a large creature carefully stepped forward, looking at him with glowing eyes. Every instinct demanded he run as adrenaline flooded his system, but something made him stay. They stared at each other for several minutes, before the wolf took a step forward and woofed softly. When the boy took another step back, the creature crouched down, his belly touching the ground, and tried again.
When the beast was just a few feet away, Lay carefully dropped to a knee and held his hand out to be inspected. He giggled softly when he received a playful lick, and didn’t protest when a large head butted against his leg.
“Hello again,” Lay cooed as he scratched the wolf’s head, receiving another lick in reply. “I don’t suppose you know somewhere I could spend the night, do you?”
The wolf tilted his head and just stared at the boy as he continued to pet him.
“I kind of got kicked out of the house for the weekend, and Baekhyun is out of town, so I have nowhere to stay.” He explained, shivering as a breeze rustled the trees. The temperature was already starting to drop, and he longed to have a jacket. It wasn’t cold enough to be dangerous, just uncomfortable, but he hoped he could find some place out of the wind.
The wolf whined softly as he rubbed against the boy. Taking a gently hold on the boys shirt, he gave it a few tugs and walked a few feet further down the path. Lay just stared at the wolf as he turned to look at him, barking softly when he didn’t move.
“You want me to follow you?” Another memory surfaced, but it was gone before he could grab it. Sighing, he stood and let the wolf lead him further into the woods. Every few minutes, the beast would glanced back to make sure Lay was still there, growling lightly whenever the brunette would protest or ask where they were going.
Finally, he saw the mouth of small cave and smiled when the wolf went inside. It wouldn’t do much against the cold, but it would get him out of the wind. As he stepped inside, he gasped as a wave of memories flooded his thoughts. He remembered waking up here with the wolf standing guard. Tears filled his eyes as he recalled how he had started to beat himself with a sharp rock in an attempt to end his life. And he remembered how the wolf had stopped him and given him comfort.
Sensing Lay’s sudden distress, the wolf leaned against his leg and began to lick his hand. Giving the wolf a sad smile, he settled against the wall. “I really am pathetic, aren’t I?” Lay asked as stared at the ceiling. He laughed as the wolf shook his head and sat next to him, leaning against his side. The brunette wrapped his arms around the creature and hugged him. “Thanks, for saving me again. I slept in a bus stop once, and it’s not an experience I ever want to relive. This is a paradise, compared to that.
As he settled into a comfortable position on the floor, he accidentally bumped his injured wrist and hissed in pain. He bit back a gasp as he felt a wet tongue gently brush along the bruised skin. He whined and licked Lay’s face. “It’s not that bad.” Lay mumbled when the wolf continued to nurse his hand and face. “I really don’t think he meant to hurt me, but knowing he could do so much damage without trying, terrifies me. I’m grateful that he helped me that day, I don’t think Suho was going to let me walk away that time, but I’d be just as happy if he stayed away from me. Just sitting next to him in class makes me nervous.” Lay sighed as the wolf curled up next to him and he placed his head on a cushion of thick fur.
“Baekhyun wants me to get another seat assigned so I don’t have to be near him, and I kind of agree. But, he really did seem sorry when he apologized. What do you think I should do?” Lay laughed as a wet tongue lapped at his nose and cheek. He yawned and closed his eyes, the warmth from his new friend lulling him. “Kris,” he whispered right before sleep claimed him. “I’m going to call you Kris.”
