I've always liked that name on that character. It's a classical, formal sounding name, like you'd expect to see at the bottom of an important document. It would be followed by an initial and a prestigious last name, and probably by a Roman numeral. It would belong to a member of an old and influential family.

Except it doesn't. It belongs to a character who is either a young boy, a retarded not-so-young boy, or Faulknerian idiot man child* who has only a hazy grasp of the concept of death.

* It's been too long since I read it and I don't remember how old Vardaman is supposed to be. Memory places him as a slow teenager.
