Patience
Kanna watches him, and decides that the struggle is the most beautiful thing of all.

Not his eyes, though the anguish in them certainly makes them brighter.

(it’s from the unshed tears)

Not his hands, though his hand’s flex of sinew draws her eye.

(it’s because he’s convulsively clutching his sickle with nervous fingers)

Not his legs, though the ripple of muscle makes her want to trace them with her fingertips.

(it’s the way he shifts from foot to foot, anxious and apprehensive)

Kohaku does not want to kill these people, yet kill them he must. Within is a dreadful conflict, a battle between compulsion and aversion, and to Kanna it is a beautiful, beautiful thing. She wishes she could see it, would witness it with her own dead eyes.

She settles for merely studying the outward signs, relishing each one as the only evidence of his lovely struggle. She has come, over time, to love Kohaku not for anything of himself, but for the way that she can study him, study his reactions and his expressions and his pain.

Tedious, it is, to merely exist instead of live. Owned by Naraku, Kohaku might be, but he is still alive. Kanna can’t use the lives she takes from people, can only watch as they melt into the cold silver surface of her mirror and wish she knew how it felt.

“It is time,” she tells him, and drinks in the defeat on his face, flooding his eyes. He raises his sickle, and Kanna observes another piece of his soul die as he slays their captives, one by one by one. One day, there will be none of it left.

She wonders how long it will take, how many people he will have to kill, until that day when his soul is gone, his life is gone, the spark in his eye is gone. Until the day he is exactly the same as her.

It will take a while, but that’s fine. Kanna is patient. She can wait.
