I know this comes very late, but I recently watched The Birth of a Nation and, while I couldn't stand the racist over tones in it, and didn't really enjoy anything else in the film, I did watch another D. W. Griffith movie and I immediately wanted to let you know about it:
Intolerance, which was made a few years after Birth... was an incredible movie, that you can find for free on archive.org. It had a powerful, amazing message about acceptance, love and social injustice; it was almost hard to believe that the same man made this who was happy with how Birth of a Nation turned out on film. If you see nothing else by him, I really suggest you watch Intolerance.
