A One Man War? Charlie Wilson's War

While the movie expertly emulated the Cold War period, it made relevant references to current issues while providing historical background for the United States' foreign policy. I'd thoroughly enjoy proselytizing about the significance of background art in relation to people, the odd usage of camera angles, good acting (though the script didn't ( Read more... )

When I had seen this movie advertised on television to the music of Don McLean's 'American Pie', a smiling Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson seemed to be promoting the next feel-good movie of the summer; not a film that could do full justice to the history or the political intrigues of the late Cold War.

Though I'm glad you experienced the movie firsthand, if you're still interested in the subject matter I highly recommend you look into Steve Coll's 'Ghost Wars', a book I had read for a terrorism class in college and still keep on my bookshelf to this day.

Well, one thing is, I probably know less actual/technical facts about the Cold War than the movie. It's jam packed full of interesting tidbits of information and details that I don't recall exactly. I can't say exactly how many airplanes were deployed where, just concerned with the meaning of what the countries and issues represented. I'm more visual than auditory and the subtitles were in Korean. You do make a good point all I know of it is what I read about it since I was a baby during that time. If things really were that way, it's a scary thought. Honestly I'm probably rambling just because I didn't get to have a good discussion about the film and I'm embarrassed at how it did mess with my emotions and yes I did sympathize with Russia and Pakistan but many of the scenes were still way too graphic and too much surprise . You of all people know my obsession with Russian literature, Russian writers and artists back in college. I think I'm probably the only one in my lit class who actually pored over (not just read, seriously ( ... )

Don't worry so much! Your interpretation of the movie is your own, and the emotions you felt don't need to be defended. If anything you have a much greater understanding than my own, a guy who has yet to even see the film ( ... )

George Bush after his presidency... whatever he does, I hope there's more public speaking involved.
