tired of being nice...

I’m tired of being nice.

I seem to be unable to help myself from being helpful. I’m sure pop psychology has some name for this. It’s probably called, AHD (Abundantly Helpful Disorder) or something. Today I resisted picking up a sign out in front of the shop that the wind blew over.  I'm still feeling guilty....

Honestly, I don't do nice things for the sake of others, I actually do them to ensure that I remain a good and thoughtful person DESPITE the actions of others.

Keep doing it. It's what makes you who you are. :)

Thanks for your comment. I will give it serious thought.

I sympathise with your post. A lot of people in New Zealand used to be kind-without-acknowledgement as you describe, and I've noticed we're hardening up here too. I think the world is becoming a meaner place, reality tv where people laugh about the humiliation of others etc etc. My daughter (aged 14 1/2) discuss this often. We've decided that the meaning of life is ... drumroll ... managing to be loving and kind despite the way other people choose to be in the world. Success is often seen as being popular, having everyone like/love/do nice things for you and if you still treat people like crap, that's "cool" (like the hideous people who gave no acknowledgment to the thoughtful person who returned their baby's shoe). However, what use is such "personal (probably in their opinion) success" if they still have such a mean and selfish heart. The real success should be knowing that you can still manage to find a way to be loving even to unlikeable people, and live and let them live in their small world. So hang in there, Kat. My
