How and when did it become appropriate to RSVP to an event (such as a wedding) by indicating that more people will be attending than were actually invited?

SWEET! I once portrayed a dramadarie in the church Christmas play when I was 4. I am quite knowledgeable about dramadaries.

That annoyed the crap out of me! A few people had the deceny to call and ask if they could bring a significant other before RSVPing, but a few people just said they were bringing a guest, and that pissed me off.
