I suspect yer need for MEEEEAT! at these times has to do with the amino acids...I needed them periodically during the Pregnancy from Hell. I'm not a big red-meat eater at ALL (at all), but since the Kiddo was born, I like it much better than I did.

As to the red meat and depression, I'll add just a bit of anecdotal evidence. While the onset of depression generally sends me into a sugar-seeking frenzy, the reality is that when I eat a high-protein, low-sugar diet, I'm far, far, FAR! less prone to depression. My guess is that it has to do with sustaining blood sugar levels. When I eat as I know I should, depression is a less frequent -- once or twice a year? - visitor. Episodes don't last as long -- no more than a day -- although they are intense while they last.

Meat is a good source of B12 which can be a mood elevator.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
