U don't know Horatio Hornblower at all, but I can help, a little with the ranks.
Here's how I'm *pretty sure* they work:
lowest -> highest (Enlisted)
Ensign Lieutenant junior grade Lieutenant Lieutenant Commander (Referred to as 'Commander') Commander Captain Admiral
There's also that know of lowest -> highest
Crewman Chief
Outside of those, there are Yeoman (an enlisted personnel who is an assistant to the captain), Doctor (who may also hold rank, but I do believe that 'Doctor' takes precedent), Nurse, Chef, Cadet (if they're still in school)
The ranks changes over the Star Trek series. Try looking here for more specific things from each show.
