i think i might have a spider bite, or some other non-mosquito insect bite on the inside of my right arm, about halfway between my shouder and elbow. it hurts like a BITCH and itches but also sort of ...stings? should i get this looked at, or just keep intermittently scratching at it and hoping it goes away ( Read more... )

i might have it looked at just to be sure it isn't a bad type of spider bite

it hasn't really been itching at all yesterday, and i'm wearing a sleeveless top - maybe the shirt i was wearing yesterday was irritating it more so than normal, but i'll keep my eye on it. thank you :-)

lemme know if you have any questions i can answer [now or in the future] since i did spend the last year as a designer [still something i'd like to continue to pursue as a career but with a different company, bah]... anyways, good luck. i'm by no means trying to discourage you, just being realistic, i don't know what your financial situation is like, but keep in mind that the design business is inextricably linked to the housing market... places where constuction and real estate are doing well are places [geographically] where designers will do well [financially] but i know the economy is suffering in much of the country and there are a bazillion foreclosures everywhere it seems, i don't know what things are like around you, and maybe if you take this class they can give you a better idea or an idea of what kind of income you can expect to earn in different parts of the country... it's something that varies A LOT and it is a position that whatever your specialty is generally comission based salary. anyways good luck. $400 isn't ( ... )

thanks so much, i may absolutely take you up on it. i think my first question is - did you like it? i know that answer is obviously different for everyone (there are people in the world who love doing my sort of job, while i hate it) but it's good to get feedback anyway.

as far as financial situation... the #1 thing is probably that, even though the market is DOWN, it's not totally bottomed out around the ny metro area (and i think it pretty much never does). there's just too much of a demand around here, as i'm sure you know. but additionally, i have an aunt (well, greg's aunt) who is a kitchen designer. her take on the situation right now is that since people aren't buying, they're taking what they maybe had been saving to upgrade to a bigger house and putting it into their own house; she says she's actually been really busy. but you're ABSOLUTELY right that i'll be asking and kind of concerned with the issue of what i might theoretically earn as a designer. i wish i had a situation where i could do this just for fun but ( ... )

i liked it when i was busy. i was a designer through a furniture store. i liked my big projects, i liked going to peoples houses that were either empty or dated and working up floor plans and finding the perfect everything to turn them around, i like working on windows b/c it allowed me to be more creative. i didn't like the part of my job where i was a salesperson in the store. i didn't like having to make small talk with the people who came in the door and trying to sell myself and my services or whatever. and we were slow. a lot. my biggest problem was that if i didn't have a big project to work on i was bored b/c there wasn't other stuff to do, but i still had to be there my full 40 hours and didn't get paid much of anything for that time b/c i wasn't working on a big project and we worked on comission. pay scale varies a lot in the field depending on what you are doing and where/for whom, the company i was with i would say that a few years in [b/c it takes time to learn a lot of things and develop your client base, the ( ... )

is that $50,000 in colorado or were you already approximating the ny version of the salary? b/c i would think w/ cost of living and thus pay being somewhat inflated here vs there, that wouldn't be an AWFUL salary here. i certainly don't claim to know what the exact ratio is, but if i had to guess i'd say that might be $65k here? unless of course you already sort of figured that in. it's certainly not an amazing salary but it's something to consider. compared to one of my OTHER potential careers (librarian) it's a fuckin' haul.
