The Company’s been dismantled, but he finds his mother’s death too suspicious to believe it to be natural cause. Hiro tells him Adam’s grave is empty and he has intelligence telling him The Company found him again. He knows they wouldn’t have risked anyone founding out about him, and Peter’s sure they put Adam away as far and as deep as they could, but he has no doubt Adam was able to escape. Banning the Company meant removing security and apparently they thought Adam was deep enough that he couldn’t get out.

They were wrong.

He has the power to easily track him and the ability to get there before the man has a chance to escape. Adam’s right there in New York, foolishly hiding in plain sight, because he knows Peter can find him. He wants Peter to find him.

He's staying in a dingy apartment at the other end of the city, far enough for Peter to not sense him, but close enough that Peter would already have run into him, if Adam wanted him to.

“It took you long enough.” Adam has always had the ability to sense him as good as Peter can sense Adam. He doesn’t turn to look at him.

“Did you kill my mother?” he asks, low and threatening, ignoring the soft and sensual rumble of Adam’s voice.

“No, I didn’t.”

“Liar,” Peter growls. Adam’s back straightens and he slowly turns to him.

“It’s been a long time since I heard that tone from you, Peter.” If he didn’t know better, Peter would think Adam was scolding him. It reminds him of the times when he would teach him about the world and tell him what to do. He would put his hand in Peter's and guide him through the world, warning him and telling who they should save.

But Peter’s changed too much since then.

“Did you. Kill. My mother?” he asks again.

“No, Peter, I didn’t. You would’ve known if I had.” There’s sincerity in the way Adam looks at him that makes him frown questioningly.

“Then who did?”

Adam sighs. “Someone who’s going through great lengths to make it think it was I.” He turns back to the window.

“You knew I would come looking for you.”

“Yes.” Adam gives the street once last look and goes to sit on the couch, studying Peter like he always did, scrutinizingly close “I know you, Peter. So well.” Adam's voice lowers to intimate, the tone he would use whenever they were lying in bed and Adam was spinning his head with words alone. Peter shakes his head to block out the memories.

“You used me,” he almost whispers, hating it that he has to lowers his eyes and keep himself under control.

“I won’t deny that.”

Peter hears cars passing by in the street and he walks over to the window, trying to get his mind on something else than Adam sitting so close, almost touching distance, and looking at him like he knows exactly what this is doing to Peter.

He has no doubt Adam knows.

“Was any of it real?” he asks after what seems an eternity. He carefully hasn't moved and neither has Adam. “What you promised, what you said. At least, with Elle, I knew, but you...” he turns his head in Adam's direction but refuses to look at him. “None of it was real, so why should I believe you now?”

He flinches when, suddenly, a warm hand presses down in his shoulder.

“I lied to you, I know. What I did... I wanted to change the world and take my revenge on the people who imprisoned me for so long.” Another hand is placed in his other shoulder. Peter stops breathing, but he doesn't pull away. He can feel Adam's warmth through every pore and he barely manages to keep himself from leaning back. “I lied to you about many things, Peter, but I never lied about us.” Peter feels the pressure of Adam's hands increase, gently urging him backwards and he allows himself to be pulled into the embrace, Adam's hands reaching forward, crossing over his chest. He closes his eyes and bites his lower lip.

“I've missed you, Peter.” Lips press against his neck and Peter swallows a moan threatening to escape. “Come back with me,” Adam whispers. “It can be just the two of us again. Us against the world. We could do so much.” Peter feels like cold water is being poured over him and he jerks away from Adam's arms.

“No,” he growls. “I will not let you do this to me again!” He raises his hands in defence when Adam attempts to step closer. “Stay away from me.”

“You can't kill me, Peter.” A small smile is forming on Adam's lips, smug and evil, all coaxing gentleness vanished.

“You did kill my mother, didn't you?”

Adam cocks his head to the side, remembering. “The last one... Now I'm the only one left.” There's a vicious triumph in his voice and eyes that makes Peter's blood boil. The bolt of electricity out of his hand is shot before Adam has a chance to realise he's about to get hit. He lurches backwards, crushing against the far end wall and sagging to the floor.

There's blood coming from his mouth, but he smiles despite the pain. “Oh, Elle,” he breathes harshly. “This brings back memories.” He tries to move but hisses in pain. “How is she?”

“Disappeared.” Peter raises his hand for another bolt.

“Do you really think you can kill me, Peter?” Adam asks before Peter fires. His voice is already stronger, his body no doubt closed to healed.

“I can,” he says confidently and watches dispassionately when Adam's eyes widen that little bit further, knowing Peter isn't bluffing. Not anymore.

“And are you?”

“Not yet.” He ignores Adam's frown and leaves the apartment before his control snaps.

He knows he will very soon regret letting Adam go, but he can't kill him yet. He has the ability, but his love and Adam's power over him is still too strong to fight.

He won't kill Adam yet, but one day, he will.
