Darker Than Black Episodes 5 and 6

Disclaimer: As a whole these are kinda short. I was a little distracted putting my notes together but I'm sure that won't limit the discussion at all since everybody always brings together meaningful material.

EPISODE 5: RED GIANT OVER EASTERN EUROPE (PART 1)

• Anybody else think April’s character is kind of a bust?? I mean, the most useful thing I can really recall her doing this whole season is dropping rain so that November 11 could then freeze him. Which may not have even been necessary since I think (in the manga?) he said he could use the moisture in the air to create ice anyway. I kinda like April, but apart from her crassness I just…
• One thing to me that seems kind of different about November 11 is that unlike Hei, he can channel ice without relying on his hands. Other Contractors have abilities that don’t require use of their hands, but I think kinesis characters rely on the use of their hands - although right now the only person I can think of is Nick, which doesn’t help obviously.
• When Matsumoto is talking about Forfeiters being turned into research subjects - I’m slightly confused. He says (in subtitles) “Not only are cases of this extremely rare, the moment manifestation of their abilities is no longer confirmed, they are typically removed from the forensic subjects” - so the dub makes it pretty clear what is meant by the statement as a whole, but what I’m stuck on is the “manifestation of their abilities is no longer confirmed” part. The star doesn’t die, and the star is obviously inactive when the contractor is, so how do they decide that their abilities are, for lack of better terms, no longer there. (not to be confused with their ability to resurface
• Hahaha, can resist trashing the US just a little bit, portraying the CIA as hungry, uncooperative brutes! I’m not upset, but you can’t ignore stuff like that :)
EPISODE 6: RED GIANT OVER EASTERN EUROPE (Part 2)
• The music playing during Carmine and Hei’s conversation with each other is my favorite from the OST. It’s “Kuro.” I adore the vibe/atmosphere granted to each scene that the song is featured in. There’s something peaceful but epiphany-like about it at the same time.
• November 11 talking about the “pull” a Contractor feels when approaching the Gate. In the dub he speaks of it definitively as though it’s a fact, but the subtitles make it more of a guess on his part. The point made is that they don’t feel it all the time but only when they’re already close to it?
