Hello! I'm a knitter with a TON of yarn, and moving into a pretty small apartment in about a month.  I can't think of any way to store so much yarn! My crafting area will be set up in a small corner. I want to be able to store it in a way that allows for me to get to it without having to dig through a huge tub. Most shelves I've seen aren't deep ( Read more... )

I agree, if you have room for like 2-3 on their side it could look really cool, too.

I have mine separated by color into 2-gal. size zip lock storage bags. You can kind of squeeze the air out so they take up even less space. They are just lined up on a shelf right now but I bought some baskets to organize my shelves a little better.

I have a few sets of these- http://www.target.com/Sterilite-16-qt-ClearView-Storage-Drawer/dp/B000AVNG3C/ref=br_1_11?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=14034461&node=14034461&searchRank=salesrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Sterilite%2016-qt%20ClearView%20Storage%20Drawer

You can stack them as high as the ceiling, they are clear enough to see what kind of colours you have in any given drawer, and hold a LOT of yarn. Plus, they are compact enough that if you don't want to see them, you can just position them in a corner and hang a curtain in front of them, or put a plant in front of them, and they don't stick out like a sore thumb.

Only thing they -aren't- is moth-proof, so you may still want to use large ziplocs or

if you get the kind with the metal grommets you can just hang them over nails and line up as many as you need

Along the same lines - I think a canvas sweater bin - they also hang, often have clear closed fronts and are deep enough to hold several skeins at a time. You could also find a portable closet rod to hang them off of, with wheels to allow you to pull all of it out at once.
