Happy Birthday!

Maybe a trip to New York where you have free places to stay and people to take you out and booze you. Or would that be more a birthday present for me?

Oh I totally forgot to tell you! I'm coming up next weekend for Matt and Tyghe's party! We need to hang out! I'm taking a bus up there that dumps me in midtown sometime friday evening. I'll give you more details when I have them.

That doesn't count as my birthday present though! More extravagance and sillyness!

oh yeah, I think M&T's party is the day after my chemical peel and dermabrasion. I'll be looking grotesque.

At first we were not going to come because we were coming back from the beach in far south North Carolina that day and to go from there to NYC is approx. 648 miles. However, we are rethinking this and might come back on Friday instead. I'll get back to you on it.

Professional advice... katydid116 June 29 2006, 16:41:51 UTC
A law degree is indeed a good option. If you ever want to talk about public policy let me know. Seeing as it is what I do and all. I personally managed to luck into my job without having a graduate degree, though I plan to go back to get a masters in public policy soon. But from someone inside the policy field, a law degree is a great thing to have under your belt. Having a law degree does not mean you will be a lawyer. Many of my peers have law degrees and do public policy. I just personally know that I am not the type to go to law school, at least not for the time being.

As for urban planning, my best friend is an urban planner getting her masters at Carnegie Mellon. I also have a friend of a friend who is about to relocate to DC that is an urban planner (who strangely enough happens to be a Mellon). So I could facilitate those questions as well. I have always found this field absolutely fascinating.

As for you birthday, you are hanging out with all of us. And you will get drunk and set off fireworks.

Thanks for the advice, I'd definetly be interested in hearing about your experiences. The firm i've been working for does policy stuff too, mostly on transportation issues (which I find strangely fascinating). I guess I'm just trying to figure out how I can have the biggest impact. I think policy might be the best way to try and make a difference.

As someone about to enter law school, I would offer this advice: don't do it if you're not sure. There's plenty of time to dick around and figure it out (see: Me, Matt Thomas, Chris White for varying degrees of this).

The worst thing you could possibly do is rush into that kind of expensive decision without being sure of it, at least to the degree that you know the degree will be useful to you no matter what you decide to do. If you think there's a good chance you want to get into theater, though, or commercial fishing, I would say that a law degree may not be so helpful.

Something else I would point out is that you could reapply and do a 4-year JD/MA program. Many schools offer interesting combinations that include Public Policy or Urban Planning, such as UNC.

Anyway, it took me a long time to decide what to do, but I feel very strongly about a law degree being right for me now, and I am very glad I waited until I felt that sure.

Or be a garbageman. WTF do I know?

Love,
Fat Oldman Jon

I'm actually pretty burned out on the whole next gen console arms race thing. I'm really enjoying my DS just fine. All I need is a DS, a super nintendo, and a playstation, and I'm good to go. Maybe I'll buy a few more DS games for my birthday!

Anyone know of any fun games (especially RPG's) for either the DS or the GBA?

get a servent monkey for your birthday. then you can train it to make bad decisions or incourage bad decisions. Like on a monday night it can just show up in you room with a bottle of fighting cock clutched between its tiny hands.

Spelling errors aside, this post was on point! The only question I pose to you is this:

Have I ever needed any help to make bad decisions?

I think I do a great job being my own little devil on my shoulder.

but having a monkey on your shoulder and laughing as you chug copious amounts of liquor would be funnier!

ps: I finally found a rabbi nesting doll that was set at a reasonable price. I only thought it fighting that I haggle for it and make a big deal out of something like a 75cent difference haha
