Summary: Rose gets a phone call she doesn’t much like…

Rose stared at her mobile when ‘Doctor, Doctor (Bad case of loving you)’ started playing. She pursed her lips and watched for a moment as the mobile nearly sang and vibrated its way off of the conference table. Then she looked around at the other people in the room, blushed, and grabbed it up quickly, silencing the embarrassing ring tone. “Sorry… I’ve got to take this…” she said shyly and then darted out of the conference room. Before she was even out of the door she had hit the accept button and growled, “Someone had better be dead, dying, or bleeding profusely!”

There was silence at the other end of the phone for a moment before the Doctor meekly replied, “Actually, you said not to call during your meeting unless it was a matter of life or death.”

“Well is it?” Rose asked impatiently.

“Yes. And I do just happen to be bleeding rather profusely at the moment…”

Rose felt the colour drain from her face. Suddenly she wasn’t angry over the interruption… “What is it, Doctor? What’s happened? Are you alright?”

The Doctor was quiet, all she could hear was yelling and the blare of horns in the background. “Well… you see… I was driving as I sometimes do…”

“Please tell me you didn’t run into anyone,” Rose groaned.

“Oi! She ran into me!” the Doctor barked. “I was stopped at a traffic signal and she just ran right into the car, didn’t even slow down! I’m innocent!”

“Are you all right then?” Rose asked, feeling relieved.

“Of course I’m not all right! She was speeding and… and… and… They want to take me into Casualty to make sure I haven’t got a concussion… we’ll need a new vehicle by the way. And my head won’t stop spinning. Ooh, spots. Lovely spots.” He continued babbling, sounded more than just a little dazed, as Rose was headed down the corridor to her office. “Doctor… where are you at?”

“Just down from Harrods’s at Knightsbridge, close to Hyde Park. Please hurry, the woman is starting to yell at people and I know that pretty soon it’ll be my turn to get yelled at and I really really don’t want that right now. My brain feels too fuzzy to actually yell back…”

His voice sounded so pitiful that Rose reached into her pocket and pulled out one of the teleports. She raced into her office and said to her startled secretary, “Take messages, go tell the lot in the conference room we have to reschedule. Family emergency.” After grabbing her handbag from her desk, Rose set the coordinates and was soon standing outside of Harrods. Part of her hoped that perhaps the Doctor was having her on, but as she ran down the street, it quickly became apparent that he hadn’t been.

There, right in front of her, was the little dark blue hybrid the Doctor had selected as his own, a bulky SUV practically sitting in the boot and backseat. The front end of his vehicle was smashed into the backend of another car, obviously propelled there by the force of the SUV crashing into him. Rose searched the area frantically and soon spotted the Doctor leaning against a building and being tended by a medic. A smile lit up his face when their eyes met, and then he scowled as the medic rubbed at a cut over his eyebrow. Rose bounded towards him and he pushed away from the person tending to him. They met in a fierce hug and Rose buried her face in the curve of his shoulder.

“And you!” a woman shrieked suddenly, causing them to jerk apart in shock. “You listen here, you and your stupid hybrid with no sort of uptake…”

Rose spun around, already in full battle mode. “No, you listen here,” she growled, shaking her finger in the face of the tall and imposing woman’s who was shouting at them. “You could have killed him with your careless driving so I don’t want to hear you going on about how this is everyone else’s fault and trying to get out of things.”

“And just who the bloody hell do you think you are,” the woman huffed, her fists planted firmly on her hips as she glared down at Rose, clearly trying to intimidate the small woman.

“I’m Rose Tyler, co-director of Torchwood Institute. And who do you thing you are, anyway?” Rose looked the woman over contemptuously. “Let’s see… breast implants big enough that that they could knock someone out if you spin around too fast, over-sized SUV, shitty attitude and driving skills, never wanting to take responsibilities for your own actions if they affect you negatively… Yeah, you must be some poor old sod’s mid-life crisis.”

The woman’s jaw fell open. “I… I…,” she stammered. She was clearly shocked and confused, obviously not expecting anyone to actually stand up to her and hold her responsible for the accident. She looked frantically around, hoping to find support from the others she had managed to intimidate, but there was none to be found.

Rose stood there glaring, holding the taller woman’s gaze. Although her eyes flickered away occasionally., Rose’s firm staring and blazing eyes always drew her back. “You had better hope you’ve got good insurance.,” Rose continues coldly, nodding toward the Doctor. “Medical on him doesn’t come cheap considering his importance to the British Empire.” The woman stared at Rose in shock at this and her mouth worked but no sounds came forth.

Rose turned away, leaving the woman to her fish-like gaping, and focused her attention on the Doctor once again. Her eyes softened as she saw the affectionate smile on his face and she ran her fingers gently through his hair. “I could have lost you,” she said, her voice soft and full of vulnerability.

“You didn’t,” he replied gently. “Just lost the car is all. And it’s replaceable. Isn’t it?”

Rose nodded and then suddenly began to cry quietly. She wrapped her arms around the Doctor’s waist and nuzzled her nose against his chest, breathing him in as the tears fell from her eyes, leaving damp patched on his shirt. “But you’re not replaceable,” she whispered brokenly. “And she could have killed you.”

The Doctor wrapped his arms around her tightly and placed a kiss on top of her head. He sighed softly and Rose pulled back to look at his face. “Have they started making hybrid SUV’s yet in this universe?” he asked with a grin.

Rose just laughed and kissed him.
