For me, I believe the beginning would be better if the prologue wasn't there -- one of my writing teachers had this saying that was "show, don't tell". That would be good advice to keep in mind when you are writing. When you explain things to the reader (and a lot of us writers do this just to make sure the point gets across), the reader will often feel like you think they are stupid. Always hint to your message without explaining it. And when you don't fully explain things, it leaves questions in the reader's mind -- this is good because it keeps the reader guessing, and more importantly, it keeps them reading ( ... )
