I LOVE Dragon*Con. It's my goal, this year, to get as many friends as possible to attend so there will lots of awesometacular people to hang out with.
You buy your tickets and then you go whereever you want. There are weekend passes and there are day passes - but there is so much more than you can do in a single day. There are panels and sing alongs and discussion groups and parties. There are costumes and art and booths and thousands of geeks all walking around.
There is a lot of info on the dragoncon website, I go every year. Trying to get a hotel that the con is at will be hard at this point unless you don't mind spending the non-con rate (and the con rate is $150 at the marriot a night).
There are a few hotels in walking distance though that shouldn't be a problem.
Also, you need to buy a membership pass that you can also do at the website (which I need to do as well).
LOL well, your mention of it the other night is what brought it back into my memory as Something we really want to do. Plus which, any excuse to sally forth to Atlanta works for me. :)
but it's not non-HP, is it? I mean, they do have an HP track/YA fiction track.... ?
We'd mostly be into, like, HP, Neil Gaiman stuff, um... I know there are other geekdoms we like... hm... Whedon a little....
I've heard that DragonCon is a MAJOR sensory overload if you're not ready for it. If it's going to be Kix's first con, I'd strongly recommend something smaller.
Knowing Kix, I think she'd be fine. Casey really enjoyed it last year. There are very few kids, but the people running the convention told me it would be fine as long as we avoided the late night stuff. We did that and it was great.
LOL I went to that page with the vampyres and stuff and she's like OH OK COOOOOOOOOL.
So yeah-- she can handle intense. She probably would not want to avoid the late night stuff either (but I might make her depending on what it is, and how debased things become, lol)...
I remember what a blast y'all seemed to have. And again-- I like Atlanta anyway...
Oh, I like Atlanta too. As for the grown up stuff, there were a couple of sessions that were marked NC-17 in the brochure thingy (usually fan fic stuff), but I only saw one or two. Otherwise, the only thing I noticed that wasn't kid friendly was that people tended to party at lot at night. We usually just went back to the hotel by 10 or so.
Haven't been yet, but am going this year. There will be a Pirate party Sunday night. And rumors of a Shindig for us BDHs lovers. And if nothing else, people you know will be there. :)

We'd love to find some well-recommended HP related cons to attend that are friendly to her age bracket and mine as well...
