I've been in the habit of picking paperbacks off the library sci-fi shelves more or less at random, recently; I figure, it's free to try, and anything that's awful I can just put down and take back the next week. Lo these many years ago, when I was a regular attendee at LASFS - http://www.lasfs.org - a book was offered up for auction. You see, one of the ways that LASFS funds itself is through auctions of books, movie props, geeky ephemera.

Anyway...

A book, 'The Centauri Device', was offered up for auction. There were no bidders, until the auctioneer read the blurb from the back.
