For now I am just practicing really simple rock beats, trying to play them at a steady tempo without messing up, and building up my endurance. When my kick leg gets too tired, then I just mess around with fills and weird hand rhythms. I tried to play the opening Serpentor beat, but kept getting the hi-hat and kick confused. I'm working up from a very basic level.

There are drum practice rooms all over Manhattan. Look up "rehearsal space" on craigslist.
