costume update

Okay, So i've been posting these over on facebook but I feel like I"m spamming the crap out of everyone so I'm going to do a quick pic heavy post here so you can see what I've been working on.
These pictures are quick, terrible work in progress shots to bear with me and please ignore my horribly messy workspace/apartment.

This piece is one of my favorites and I've been plotting it ever since I found this amazing red woodgrain fabric at hobby lobby that reminds me of the bloody floorboards of sweeny todd's barber shop. The overskirt is a full circle with 3 rows of tucks near the hem and it's finished with horsehair braid at the hem to make it stiff. Underneath that is a salvaged black square dance petticoat that I bought at my skinniest and which never quite fit right. I whacked off the waist band and attached some antique silk ruffle to the hem (saved from an actual turn of the century garment which is so old it is disintegrating. I still have a few bits left which may resurface later). Under that is a half circle skirt of burgundy fabric embroidered with satin swirls which I've been saving since college. This is also hemmed with horsehair. It closes with a placket at the side, which will likely have buttons or hook and eyes. The center front panel is also an antique, which I purchased at a local vintage shop when they were going out of business. I have a matching panel for a shirt but it's not fared as well as this bit.

The bodice is the woodgrain fabric alternating with the burgundy swirl. The sleeves are salvaged scrap from work - a woman wanted a sleeveless dress so I made off with the sleeves. and the lace you can see in the picture sort of hanging on the hanger is antique. I made my own textile out of it by sewing a strip of beading lace which I'd dyed grey and lacing some red ribbon through. It will get sewn around the neck so the lace frames my shoulders with the ribbon towards the inside, and the ribbon gets tied at the back above the lacing. it's boned with spring steel and spiral steel and will have black grommets when I finish sewing down the facings and piping.

And today's project: Plus fours!! salvaged men's pants from goodwill. i cut the legs off to make the cuffs and the lacing flaps at the back which will get brass grommets and then lace up for a snugger fit at the waist while still leaving me hip room.

That's all for now kids. I'll update again when I finish my last project - a double layer skirt and an edwardian blouse.
