Ditto. I expected to like this movie - hell, I *love* Chicago and even put up with Evita - but it was painful. It wasn't just the bad singing by some of the stars, it was the songs. It was the plot! It was the inexplicable English accent on the street urchin. Aargh.
(FTR: Maybe it is me. I am, after all, a rock'n'roll chick. Give me Rocky Horror, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hard Day's Night, etc. On the other hand, I spent a lot of my childhood singing CATS songs, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat songs, so there are musicals I like. Or does that just prove my point even more? Signed, Confuzzled)
No, no, I feel you. I love Chicago, and Fiddler, and Carousel (which is very, very depressing) and Gigi and Seven Brides, and every single other musical ever made. (Jesus Christ Superstar is an incredible time capsule of the 60s and 70s, isn't it? )
Well, although I've watched and appreciated most "classic" musicals of the 40s and 50s - one of the exceptions being Oklahoma, which I loathe - I really don't like that kind of music, so I can't say I'm a fan of them
