Instead, I simply flit back and forth between a few friendly cliques that accept me. The idea that a group would shun you because you don't perfectly conform to their stereotype is just utterly alien to my perception of the fandom, either then or now.
There's every possibility that the problems you're having with your local community isn't their cliques or niches into which you might or might not fit, but the actually personalities themselves.

We've got this horrible fandom on the table and it's our damn home, but what are we going to *DO* about it? And I realized that there's a problem with the way you're talking here. The way you speak betrays helplessness (like you're on a "sinking island" and there's "nothing ya can do"). I disdain such a mentality.
Take a breath with some conviction--Pull yourself back together--Have some fire in your belly, damn you! You can't even help yourself with that attitude.

FA sucks, no big deal, we can one up it with software already made available. Opensource software is the answer, and some nice little dns and apache tricks to spread the load across willing donators of bandwidth.
