The crew sat around the dinner table chatting amiably about what they each had planned to do during their brief stopover on Persephone. Jayne ignored the conversation around him with his head bowed over his plate, eating diligently, when he felt the blob of protein hit his cheek with a wet splat. Conversation in the room stopped instantly and Jayne raised his head to look around at each person sitting at the table. They were all frozen, staring back at him, waiting for his reaction. The only one not meeting his eyes was River. She continued to place spoonfuls of her dinner carefully in her mouth.

Jayne picked up his napkin and proceeded to calmly wipe the food off of his face before continuing with his meal. Slowly, the banter returned and the tension in the room melted away as River’s latest antics were momentarily forgotten.

After scraping the last remnants of food from his plate, Jayne picked up his dishes and carried them over to put them in the sink. He refilled his water glass from the tap and walked back to the table. He stood directly behind River, who still refused to look up from her plate. The cup was directly above her head when he upturned it, spilling the cold contents over her.

She felt the water pour over her scalp and drip down the ends of her hair and down over her shoulders. Her body froze, her spoon still suspended in the air, stopped halfway to her mouth. She slowly turned her head slightly and could see his smirk out of the corner of her eye. Carefully she rested her spoon on the table and picked up her own water glass.

At the first sign of movement from her, Jayne took off running, River hot on his heels. Their booming footsteps could be heard echoing off the metal bulkheads as well as the occasional giggles and squeaks from River and grunts and deep belly laughs from Jayne. Mal shook his head and cursed under his breath about spoon catapults, wasting food and his crew acting like children.
