River remembers asking God to please make her a stone. Sometimes, when she can’t separate reality from her nightmares, she wishes for a reprieve from her overwhelming emotions. She thinks she’ll gladly give up even the happiest feelings if it will numb her to the pain and fear that consume her. She hasn’t felt joy since before that place anyway, she reasons, so how much will she really lose?

Two quick slashes would do it, or seven little blue pills from Simon’s cabinet. Her white tights or the belt from her dress tied around her neck, perhaps. She could stumble and fall from the catwalks, snap her neck on the floor below. Her feet step lightly across the grating, looking down at her target. If she twists just so while she drops, she’ll feel nothing. Closing her eyes, she steps to the edge and takes a deep breath, pain filling her lungs.

But then he’s there, strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her backwards to his chest. He calls her crazy and brainless, but there’s concern behind his words. He doesn’t want to see her splattered red across his blue vision. There’s a heat in his eyes that sparks something soft and warm in her stomach. And for once, there’s a feeling other than fear and pain.
