This was a really tragic story about River and Jayne, but I thought the part that got to me the most was Kaylee's reaction XD
This story really got under my skin, though. Last week, my Great Auntie passed away. She had been really sick for many years with diabetes and heart problems. No expense was spared in tests and treatments for her, and my Uncle was so dedicated in his care for her. My Dad rang me one night last week to say that Auntie was back in hospital again, and that it sounded like this time she was exhausted of hanging on, and was ready to finally rest. By the early hours of the next morning, she was gone.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I can almost put words to Uncle with Jayne in this fic. Uncle never would have left Auntie's side, but at the same time it was near impossible for him to watch her die. Jayne's denial and encouragement puts me in mind of Uncle's unfailing dedication and hope.
I love getting to write Kaylee, she doesn't try to hide emotions and her reactions are always so pure and honest. Plus you gotta love someone who can see the bright side of just about anything.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My grandmother passed recently, but it was pretty sudden (heart attack) so luckily we didn't have to see her suffer. Jayne's reaction to the situation is slightly based on some of my own family members' out and out refusal to accept her death, but mostly I wanted to show him as a flawed character that can still try to do the right thing despite his obvious limitations.
I already told you this privately, but I love the dynamic between Jayne and River in this story. When I first read it I couldn't imagine how you were going to write Jayne's exit and make it okay with the rest of the crew, not to mention River, and yet, what a perfect arc to the story.
*huggles* I couldn't have salvaged this fic without you! The idea was there, but you were completely right that it needed a more solid ending with the reunion and Jayne's breaking point. What I wouldn't do without my amazing beta! *clings*
I hate killing off River or Jayne, so even though it would have been more believable if River had died, I just couldn't do it. And it's a much happier story about regaining what you've lost than just a depressing story of Jayne's misery.
I love Mal and Zoe's line from the war, it's one of the best parts of that episode -besides Jayne's cunning hat of course! ;)
*is speechless* This was just an incredibly powerful story, really great. I can totally imagine what Jayne must has been feeling, and it's tearing me apart. You have really done a wonderful job here.
