*hugs* I wish I could give some good advice...I've moved so consistently in my life that it almost seems like a part of who I am now, though. Every move, for me, is a chance to reinvent myself.

That said--isn't there something you can do about this idiot who was renting you his basement? I mean, was there a renter's contract or something? Tell him as landlord its his fucking responsibility to put locks on his private doors, the dumbass. Okay, probably another stupid legal battle, but maybe you can scare him into doing right by you? :-S
