Reading Frenzy

Jun 07, 2019 14:26

I don't know about you guys but there are times when I go through reading frenzies, and then there are times where I barely read anything all year. Last year was a MAJOR dry spell for me. But now I'm finding myself back into the groove.

I recently finished Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot. I understand why its getting so much praise but I ( Read more... )

I was in the middle of reading Cuckoo's Calling but then I went to Book Con / found books at work that are ARCs and wanted to read them before they came out, so I put CC to the side.
Currently I'm reading the ARC of Dead Voices by Katherine Arden. It's like the kids version of the Shining.

Ooh interesting.

I read Cuckoo's Calling! I really liked it but I didn't read any of the others in the series.

Do you plan on reading the others or you find it unnecessary?

In my opinion it's unnecessary. It's not like a continuous story like Harry Potter was. There appears to be a new unrelated mystery each book with the same detective. Still entertaining enough!

I'm pretty much always reading something! I just finished a couple of nice short books that were turned into movies (and have seen both films too), 'Call Me By Your Name' and 'Love, Simon'. Both were good in their own way, but very different styles, though similar in the coming-of-age story each was. I think I prefer the latter though as it's a simpler style and not quite as angsty as the first!

Now I'm halfway through 'The Red Scrolls of Magic' by Cassandra Clare. It's a Shadowhunter novel featuring Magnus Bane & Alec Lightwood, and I love it! So much more engaging for me than the earlier stories that were from Clary's POV. Magnus and Alec are funny and adventurous, and much more my style than Clary & Jace ever were. I always liked Magnus best in the earlier books anyway! ;-)

I didn't read Love, Simon but I did read most of Call Me By Your Name, honestly I don't know why I didn't finish it. I should finish it so I can add it to my goodreads book challenge for the year haha! I agree it was super angsty. I would totally be interested in reading Love, Simon. I LOVED that movie. (I loved them both, but Love Simon was just fun!)

Oh yeah I haven't actually read anything from that author but it sounds good.

I recently read an article in Book Riot about "locked door" mysteries which are totally my style, so now I have two of them at home waiting for me to read. In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware and The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley. This is getting a little out of hand, lol.

Oh, you will love the book then!

What makes a 'locked door' mystery? The term sounds interesting! Have fun reading your stories! I know what you mean - I have about 10 unread books on my shelves (plus about 60 unread on my Kindle app) and still I managed to order a couple more to read from my library yesterday! ;-) Crazy!

Okay a locked room/door mystery is like a mystery where a group of people are stuck together and must solve a crime. Think Harper's Island (I realize that's a tv show and not a book haha) or Agatha Christie's And Then There None or Murder on the Orient Express for that matter.

Apparently Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers fits in that genre too.

Hello, for some reason LJ notifications always thinks it should send me emails of your posts (and only your posts!). So, here I am! Remembering that LJ exists! I am currently reading The Luminaries and very much enjoying it! Prior to that, i read the most recent Don Winslow novel, The Border. It was the 3rd in the The Power of the Dog series. It was no Savages, and probably my least fave of the three, but still mostly enjoyable! A different question, though, would be, what am I SUPPOSED to be reading? And that would definitely not be a 1000 page novel set during the New Zealand gold rush!! That would MOST definitely be my exam revision notes! Which is what I'd better go do now! Byeeeeee!

And I should really read The Luminaries, seeing as it's written by an NZ author! ;-)
