[Tutorial 004: Gendry Icon] 1. I knew I wanted a bit of negative space and an alternate background for this icon so the first thing I did was paste my screencap on a 100x100 canvas and free-transformed it to the size I wanted.
>
2. I then flattened the image, pressed CTRL+J to duplicate the background layer, filled the bottom layer with #445959 and added a Layer Mask to the layer with Gendry on it.
>
3. I then used a hard black brush to erase the background from around Gendry, like so:
>
4. I took this texture by lumsx and Gaussian Blur'd it until it looked like this and pasted it below Gendry and set it to Soft Light. I also took this texture by lookslikerain and pasted it above the texture before it and also set it on Soft Light.
> + >
5. I took this texture by tinebrella, turned it black and white (Alt+Shift+CTRL+B), pasted it above the layer with Gendry on it, set it to Soft Light, added a Layer Mask and masked over his face and part of his body like so:
> > > >
6. I took this texture by lumsx and Gaussian Blur'd it until it looked like this again set it to Soft Light.
>
7. I took this texture by midnight_road and set it to soft light, added a Layer Mask and masked his face.
+ >
8. I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible, added a Gaussian Blur set to 2.3 and set that layer to Soft Light.
+ >
9. I added a Vibrance layer and a Curves layer with the following settings:
+ >
10. I then took this texture by innocent_lexys, made it black and white (Alt+Shift+CTRL+B), set it to Soft Light and duplicated it.
> >
11. I once again pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible, added a Gaussian Blur set to 2.3 and set that layer to Soft Light set to 30%.
> > >
12. I then took this texture by lessrest, added a Gaussian Blur to it set to 18.6 and darkened it with Curves until it looked like this. I pasted it and set it to Lighten at 34%.
> >
13. I once again pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible, added a Gaussian Blur set to 14 and set it to Soft Light at to 41%, added a Layer Mask and brushed over his face.
+ >
14. I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible one last time, went to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and set the Amount to 50/Radius to 1.0/Threshold to 0 and then lowered the opacity of this layer to 30%.
Voila!

[Tutorial 005: Arya Icon] 1. The first thing I did was crop and resize to 100x100. This screencap is pretty dark so I duplicated the base and set it to Screen and then duplicated that layer four times, then once more and set that layer to Soft Light. I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible and sharpened it a bit. Unfortunately I flattened all of these layers so I don't have a step by step but it's basically just prepping your image as per usual.
> >
2. This icon was for a good vs. evil challenge at inspired20in20 and I knew I wanted this icon to show darkness and light really well so I added a black and white Gradient Fill layer set to Soft Light like so:
> >
3. I then added a Curves layer to brighten it and add some contrast.
4. Arya's hair and some of her face were looking a little too sharp for my taste so I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible and used the Smudge tool with a 1-2 pixel hard brush set to 13% strength and lightly smudged over the sharp areas.
>
5. I noticed that the areas around Arya's neck and shoulder were looking kind of jagged so I painted around them with a small brush in colors that match the image:
> >
6. I then added a Selective Color layer with the following settings:
8. I wanted a little more contrast so I added a Curves layer with the following settings:
+ =
9. I then added this texture by lessrest, added a Gaussian Blur set to 5 so that it looked like this, set it to Soft Light and lowered the opacity 31%. I also added this texture by (unknown) and set it to Screen at 66%.
> + =
10. I wanted to add some vibrance and bring out the yellows in her face, so I added two Vibrance layers and two Selective Coloring layers with the following settings:
11. Lastly, I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible, went to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharpen Mask with Amount set to 50/Radius set to 1.0/Threshold set to 0 and then lowered the opacity of that layer to 30%.
Voila!

[Tutorial 006: Jack & Juliette Icon] 1. The first thing I did was rotate the Jack screencap horizontally then crop both screencaps, paste one on top of the other, set the top layer to Lighten and then merge the two layers.
> > > >
2. These caps are both very dark and I knew I wanted Juliette to be less red and more yellow, so I added a Selective Color layer and a Curves layer with the following settings:
+
> /
3. I then added this texture by lessrest (can you tell that this is like, my favorite texture ever?) and set it to Lighten at 36%.
5. I wanted it a little more grungey and a little more contrast so I added this texture by innocent_lexys set to Screen and added a Brightness/Contrast layer with the following settings:
+ >
6. Last but not least, I pressed CTRL+Shift+E to Stamp Visible and then sharpened it by going to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask with Amount set to 50/Radius set to 1.0/Threshold set to 0 and lowered the opacity of that layer to 27%.
As you can tell there are certain textures I am obsessed with and use all the time. I hope you guys enjoyed these tutorials and let me know if you have any questions, need anything clarified or if I messed something up! Also there are a couple textures that I'm unsure who the maker is so let me know if you know :)
I'll be posting lots of icons sometime this week, too, and maybe even a new texture set!
