(Chapter 6) "Tatsuya!" Ueda heard someone call his name and he turned around. It was only Kame.
"Ne, Tatsuya are you okay now?" Kame ran to him and then they walked together to school.
"Yeah I guess" Ueda shortly answered.
"I'm sorry I gave Nishikido your bag yesterday, but he said he really needed to talk to you"
"It's okay" Ueda had his head down and looked at the ground.
Suddenly he bumped against another boy who was walking the other way.
"Watch where you're going!" he snapped at the boy and looked angry at him before walking away.
"I'm sorry" Kame bowed shortly at the surprised looking boy and walked after Ueda.
He had noticed the enormous change in Ueda's behaviour and it scared him, but he didn't spoke a word about it. It was nothing like Ueda to yell at people or hit people or even run away from school. But maybe if he didn't bring the subject Ryo to the surface, Ueda would eventually go back to his normal, friendly self.
The whole way to school Kame had been walking after Ueda and he was thinking about a way to help him.
But nothing came up...
"Ueda, are you okay? I was so worried yesterday" Ryoko came to them when they entered the school gates.
But Ueda didn't speak a word and walked past her.
"What's wrong with him? Is he crazy? How can he walk pat Ryoko-sama" Kame heard people say. Ueda must have heard it too, but he ignored it.
Indeed what IS wrong with him? Kame wondered and entered the school after Ueda.
The first hour was over and Johnny-sensei hadn't spoken to Ueda yet. He was, just like everyone else, very curious, but when he looked at Ueda he had a very dark aura around him.
He leaned with his head on his good hand and was drawing with the other.
The painkillers were finally working, but he still didn't get enough sleep at night.
His hair looked like it hadn't been washed in days and his fringe was in front of his dark, tired eyes.
Even Ryo who was turned around on his seat to look at Ueda saw the change in his face. He felt guilty for causing so much trouble for Ueda and he also tried to think of a way to help him.
But maybe he just should keep his distance for a while. Maybe he should give Ueda a little time to think about his confession.
"Ryo, you wanna come with us for karaoke after school?" Jin hit his shoulder when Ryo didn't react.
"Where did you do that for!?" Ryo snapped at him.
"Is asked if you're coming with us for karaoke?"
"No, I can't. I have the baby"
"Why don't you give the baby to Ueda for this night? It's not that he can't do anything with his arm, look he's drawing" Yamapi joined in the discussion.
"He almost broke his arm and that is my fault, stupid, so I have the baby for at least this week" Ryo glared at Yamapi and Jin for their stupid comments. Why couldn't they see that Ueda suffered? Why couldn't they see that he was hurt? Why couldn't they just leave him alone for a minute?
"Well, it's your choice" Jin and Yamapi said and turned back to the blackboard.
They were his friends since Ryo could remember and they had much fun together and all, but sometimes they just had to know when they should keep a safe distance.
Ryo turned back to look at Ueda.
He would stay away from him for ever if only he would turn back to his normal, happy self.
At lunchtime Ueda wasn't much different. He hadn't touched his food and he was still moving his pencil over a piece of paper. The other kids were busy talking and laughing with each other or they were eating the food that their mothers had made in the morning.
Ryo looked at Kame. He was trying to get his attention, but Ueda didn't want to see it.
Suddenly Ueda threw his pencil on his paper and walked with big steps out of the classroom.
The class was soon filled with soft whispers and strange looks.
"What's wrong with Ueda? He is crazy! He has been acting weird this whole morning"
"SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" Ryoko screamed and the whole class became awfully quiet. She was a beautiful girl and a good student, but when she was angry or you offended her friends, you'd better run away, fast.
Kame and Ryo quickly exchanged looks before Kame ran out of the classroom.
"Kamenashi, wait!" Ryo called who ran after him.
Kame stopped and turned around to look at Ryo "What do you want? I hope you feel guilty, because it's your fault he is been acting so strangely"
"Do you know where he went?"
"Are you even listening to me!?"
"Yes, I heard you, but I don't care. I care about Tatsuya" Ryo saw the worry in Kame's eyes.
"He probably went to the nurse's office, he was there yesterday too" Ryo knew that Kame was lying. He has seen Kame calling Ueda at the gates and he saw Ueda running in the distance.
"Okay, then I will go there" Ryo walked away in the direction of the nurse's office. How much he wanted to go after Ueda, he knew in his heart that he had to stay away and wait until Ueda was ready.
Kame ran back to the classroom, grabbed his and Ueda's bag and ran out before anyone could ask what had happened with Ueda.
He knew where Ueda was. It was Wednesday and Ueda always went to the gym to box.
And Kame had the idea, that even with his almost broken elbow; he wasn't going to stay home.
The air in the gym was warm and smelled sweaty. Everywhere were big blokes boxing with each other or hitting at sand enclosed in a sack and Kame didn't exactly feel comfortable being the only skinny boy in the whole gym.
He noticed Ueda coming out of the changing room with a towel around his neck and a bottle of water in his hand. He was not wearing the sling, but the bandage around his elbow was visible because he was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt.
Ueda walked past Kame and didn't say a word. He put his water and towel on a bench before sitting down.
With one hand he tried to put his boxing glove on, but it was very difficult.
"Let me help" Kame said when he sat down, next to Ueda on the bench and got his hand with the glove.
"Thanks" Ueda whispered.
"That's what friends are for ne?" Kame noticed that Ueda was looking at him and he smiled.
He knew Ueda for a long time, but he never behaved so strangely. Something must be awfully wrong.
"You know you can talk to me right? About anything" Kame said when he put the last knot in the glove.
"Yes, I know" Ueda said before he stood up and walked to his teacher.
Ueda came to live when he began boxing. He hit all his aggression in the sack or jumped with the skipping rope until he had no energy left.
Kame looked at his friend. He had much admiration for him. His arm was almost broken, he had another problem that Kame didn’t know about and still he was going on. Even though he had changed completely, he still lived his live.
"Harder! Faster! Come on Tatsuya it's not your mother!!" his coach yelled at him when he was hitting at the sack with only one arm.
After half an hour of hitting that sack, Ueda's face was turned bright red and sweaty and his hair was stuck on his forehead.
Kame looked at his friend and for the first time he saw exhaustion in his eyes.
"Harder! Faster!" his coach yelled again.
Kame was surprised when Ueda went even faster. He would have hit the coach if he were him.
Ueda swung his arm back and forth from his side to the sack and back.
At the same time he jumped up and down on his feet.
After another 10 minutes the coach finally patted Ueda's shoulder and gave him a compliment for his good work. Ueda sat down at the bench next to Kame and breathed slowly.
"Aren't you tired yet?" Kame smiled and opened Ueda's water for him.
"Almost" Ueda smiled shortly before he put the bottle to his mouth and gulped all the water.
Kame was glad that the Ueda he knew was coming back little by little.
After Ueda's short break the coach came up to him to ask if Ueda could jump the skipping rope, but the doctor had forbid him to use his elbow.
The coach walked away and said that he had an idea.
Ueda and Kame looked at each other questioningly and laughed when the coach came back.
He had a longer rope in his hands.
“You can jump if your friend and I twirl it”
“Sure” Kame and Ueda said both and they stood up.
At the beginning Kame had to get used to the speed, but after a while it went flawless.
“Do you want to jump too?” suddenly a boy came up to him. He had short hair and a rough look, but Kame guessed he would be really soft on the inside.
“What? Su…sure” he laughed shyly and gave the end of the rope to the boy.
Kame walked next to Ueda and when the boy and the coach started twirling, they jumped up and down.
This time, they knew they had to go slower. Kame couldn’t go that fast and they had to re-start only twice when Kame’s foot got stuck behind the rope.
“You’re tired yet?” Ueda asked and smiled bright.
“Nope” Kame jumped a circle.
“Show off” Ueda smiled and shook his head.
After ten minutes of non-stop jumping Kame felt tired, but even though he knew Ueda had a better condition he didn’t want to loose.
He tried to make silly faces so that Ueda had to laugh and would stop the rope.
But when Ueda made silly faces too, he knew he had to turn around or he was the one to stop.
He looked at the boy at the end of the rope. From his toes to his chest and face and he smiled shyly when he noticed the boy looked him straight in the eyes.
The boy gave him a smile too and it shocked Kame so much that he stopped jumping and the rope pulled his legs from under him, causing him to fall on the ground with a loud thud.
“Are you okay?” the boy was the first one who got Kame’s hand and pulled him up.
“Kame, you okay?” Ueda also gave him a hand.
“Yeah I’m okay, but I’m going to sit down now” Kame pulled his hands back and all the remaining blood out of his body went to his head when he noticed that the boy didn’t want to let go of his hand.
“I’ll help you” he smiled and together they walked to the bench.
Ueda smiled at the sight of them.
After Ueda had taken a shower and made sure his arm hadn’t gotten wet, he got dressed and walked out of the changing room in his normal clothes.
There he saw Kame looking at the boy from earlier through a window in the hallway.
“Why don’t you ask him out?” Ueda whispered in Kame’s ear.
“Wha…what are you talking about?” Kame acted like he didn’t know where Ueda was talking about.
“Do you know his name?”
“N…no”
“Tanaka Koki” he said and at the same time Koki looked at the window where Kame and Ueda were looking at him.
He smiled when he saw Kame’s shy face and waved shortly before going back to fighting his opponent.
“Come on, let’s go before I have to carry you on my back” Ueda laughed and hit Kame on his shoulder to get his attention.
“Ne Kame, have you ever been in love?” Ueda suddenly asked when they were walking to their houses.
“Uh, I don’t know… I think I have” Kame said and looked down to the ground.
“How does it feel?”
“I don’t know exactly. I guess you want that person’s attention, but you’re scared when you confess you’ll push that person away. The person will not leave your thoughts or dreams and you want to be with that person all day long. You get butterflies in your stomach and your heart skipped a beat when you see him or her. You get shy and the first thing that comes to your mind when you see that is person is running away were you can freely fantasize about him or her” Kame was thinking about the words he just said. He wanted Koki’s attention, he was thinking about him now, he wanted to run back to the gym to see him again, he has a weird feeling in his stomach and his heart is beating like crazy. Was he really in love with Koki? A person he had just met today and barely spoke to?
Ueda also thought about the words Kame had said. Did he really feel that way? About Ryo?
