By the way, if you guys haven't done it already, I think the readership is primed for a piece on what (and how much of it) people should bring with them on even a casual a trip to the mountains. I know I have yet to see that story done even with all this media coverage of the issue. Obviously this highlights the need to bring extra food and water, but what other things could've helped that most of us haven't thought of or don't know about?
It even crossed my mind that when the dust from all this settles, a fund could be set up in James' name to educate people on that subject.
I'd been following this story since it broke that a family was missing. When they found the family I was so hopeful that this story would end happily. Even though I was just a passive observer I felt so bad for their family today and it was on my mind most of today about how James decided to brave subzero temperatures for his family and how close rescuers might have been to saving him and how his two adorable children will grow up not ever knowing him. Life is filled with the unexpected. We should cherish our time in it and the people closest to us.
I am not trying to exagerate my connection with him--I didn't know him personally, but those few degrees of separation make you realize how close we all are. After hearing about him from those who did know him even casually, I realize I would've instantly liked him.
