John Edwards looks good for his age

I just shook John Edward's hand! And I thanked him for his speech! I almost cried! Ok, I'm a loser for that last part, but it was pretty cool to get to shake his hand in a crowd of people. He was really cool about the whole thing, posing for pictures, signing stuff, and he listened to what I said about his speech. Which was stupid and unthoughtout

I think this, which I shamelessly quoted from an article I read for my Race, Gender and the Christian Right class, does a good job dispelling the "self-reliance" myth a little bit.

A quicker way of making the same point:

Suppose you and another person are at one end of a hallway, and some goal you both want really bad is on the other end. But you can afford shoes, and the other person can't. And there are bits of broken glass scattered along the floor.

A conservative would point out that you can both make it to the goal if only you work hard enough. (Suppose the glass is scattered enough that a barefooted person could pick his or her way through it.) But it's pretty obvious that you have an unfair advantage over the other person, because while by working "hard enough", you can both acheive the goal, "hard enough" for you is nothing compared to what it is for the person without shoes.
