My first tutorial, oh my....

In this tutorial, we'll be going from
This:
To This:

Done is Photoshop CS3, but works with CS2 as well. Sorry, as I don't know anything about PSP, I couldn't develop a tutorial for it. I believe everything will translate except selective coloring.

Start by choosing your base.

I chose this one by: jillicons

Because I thought the girl was pretty, but I didn't care for the bloody eye, so I created a way around it. Here's how.

Step One:
Duplicate your base and set it to COLOR BURN at 40%

Step Two:
Duplicate your original base a second time. Click and drag that over the top of your color burned layer. Move that layer to the left, positioning it so that the hair just covers half her face. See example below.

Once it's there, with a soft edge eraser tool, erase around the white until it is only her hair that covers the face. Putting the icon on 200% or 300% zoom works well for this to see detail.

Step Three:
Repeat step two, so that both girl's faces are covered with hair.

Step Four:
Add new solid color layer: #f1f34a. Set it to SOFT LIGHT at 100%

Here is where the UGH part begins!

Step Five: Selective Color - Set to Normal at 80% opacity

Reds:
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: 100
Black: 100

Yellows:
Cyan: -75
Magenta: 7
Yellow: -14
Black: 0

Cyans:
Cyan: 100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: 100
Black: 100

Neutrals:
Cyan: 80
Magenta: -3
Yellow: -50
Black: 14

Just this last time, I promise!

Step Six: Selective Color - Set to Normal at 60% opacity

Reds:
Cyan: -100
Magenta:
Yellow: 100
Black:

Yellows:
Cyan: -100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: -100
Black: 0

Neutrals:
Cyan: 50
Magenta: 0
Yellow: -10
Black: 0

Step Seven: Color Balance - Set to Normal at 100% opacity

Midtones:
Color levels:
-25, 17, -7

Shadows:
Color levels:
-18, 4, 19

Step Eight: New solid color layer - #e5e5e5. Set it to COLOR BURN at 25% opacity. You can play with this layer a bit to set the depth of color you want.

Step Nine: Brightness/Contrast layer.
Brightness: 3
Contrast: 14

Step Ten:
Take this texture by: choaticfae(?) and set it to OVERLAY at 85% opacity

After:

Step Eleven:
Take this texture by: stripeds0cks and set it to SCREEN at 90% opacity

After:

Step Twelve:
Take this texture by: stripeds0cks

Set it to SCREEN at 100% opacity. Take a soft edged eraser brush and erase just parts of the texture over her face.

Then its simply a case of adding your own text, tiny text or any brushes you prefer and you're done!

Finished icon:

You can also experiment with a variety of different textures underneath the last two fractile layers. For example, I used this texture by ?? (help me out if you know!)

I placed it UNDER the last two fractile textures and set it to MULTIPLY at 90% opacity. Makes a great aged look!

Obviously, I'm hoping people won't follow this tutorial to the letter and try to put it out as their own, this is just for the purposes of learning. Experiment and develop your own.

Thanks, I hope I was able to explain it well enough to follow. If you have questions, please feel free to ask!
