Crimson Howls: Chapter 13
Cloud 9
I enter the room with Kiba by my side. He had been at my side so many times in the past, and would be at my side for what might be my last moments of life. I had to get all the negative thoughts out of my mind. < I’ll be just fine. Nothing bad will happen.> I kept assuring myself.
“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.” I told him.
“I understand that you want Kiba to stay with you. It’s scary, but I won’t let anything happen to you.” He sat me down on the bed. “Just lie down and relax.”
My heart was pounding. I was so anxious to just get it over with. “Can I close my eyes?”
“Sure!” He said happily. “You have nothing to worry about. All you have to do is stay calm.”
I closed my eyes. Immediately, I feel Darren looming over me. Kiba’s muzzle made it’s way under my hand. I scratched his muzzle and he made happy whimpers. I felt Darren kiss my neck gently. My heart seemed to stop for a brief moment. “Are you ready?” He asked.
“Yes.” I just barely got the word out. My heart was pounding so hard, it felt as if it would break through my rib cage. I felt the fangs pierce my throat. It felt almost like a relief. I started to relax. I wasn’t sure why I was so calm now, but it was better then being scared to death. My hand was still on Kiba’s snout, but I could feel my hand slipping off to the side. I was getting weak. It felt as if I was falling asleep. I didn’t even feel Darren remove his fangs from me. The next thing I knew. I felt a rush of hot liquid enter my mouth. I knew it blood, because Darren had explained to me the process of making a vampire. It felt like I was drinking the water of life. This is what would keep me from staying in the grave. The blood stopped flowing into me. I opened my eyes slowly. “It’s over?” I asked weakly.
‘Not yet.” Darren said. “Just close your eyes. It’ll be over very soon.”
I closed my eyes again, wondering what would happen next. I knew my body had to die first before I would become a vampire, but how long was it going to take? I got my answer almost instantly. I felt a wave a pain rush through my entire form. Darren hadn’t told me about this. I started moaning in pain. “What’s going on?” I moaned. I was tearing up. I couldn’t stand the pain I was in. I wanted it to go away.
“You’re dying.” Darren said tying to hold and comfort me. “It’s painful. We all go through it. It’s very brief.”
As the pain died down, I felt myself getting weak rapidly. I blacked out in an instant.
I woke up feeling so strange. I felt cold. I also noticed a tingling sensation in my teeth. I sat up without any difficulty. I wasn’t weak at all. Kiba was still sitting by the bed, and Darren was still sitting on the bed looking at me with a smile.”I need a mirror.” I said getting up.
“Right over there on the door.” Daz said cheerfully. “I think that was the first thing I said after I was changed........How odd.”
I went over to the mirror and look at myself. It felt as if I was looking at someone else. I wasn’t that pale, I knew I would get paler in time. I still looked different. I could really put my finger on it. I looked at my teeth. My canines were like two little daggers. I turned to Darren. “I’m immortal now.”
“That’s right. The dying part wasn’t as scary as you thought it would be, eh?”
“It just felt like I went to sleep. There was nothing there though. Just darkness. I thought maybe I would see something. A light. Maybe see my body lying on the bed as my soul left it. Angels maybe, but nothing at all.” I said very sorrowfully
“Yeah, it’s very sad to know that those who will eventually die will have nothing to go to. There’s no Paradise waiting for them.” He said. We stood in silence for a moment. I was a bit glade that I wouldn’t have to experience death again. I would remain with Darren forever.
Kiba said and left the room.
“The others already know what I did.” Darren said. “I didn’t tell them, but they’re vampires. They can sense you’ve been changed.
I embraced Darren and we kissed lovingly. “Daz, can I be alone for a minute?” I asked.
“Sure.” He replied. “I might as well take my beatings from the rest of the coven now. We’re really suppose to tell when we’re going to make another vampire, and I don’t think they’ll be to happy about me making the last human in the Bronx into a vampire.”
“They’re not really going to beat you, are they?”
“No, but I am going to get told off. I know that.” He left me alone. I caught the sound off paws trotting on wood as he opened the door. As he left, the pack entered and gawked at me as if I was a complete stranger. Tsume snorted. “You’re a vampire now?”
“What does it feel like?” Toboe asked.
“I defiantly stronger, and I bite the inside of my cheek twice already because of the fangs. I’ll get use to ‘em though.” I got my first chance to use my mental abilities when I caught a thought from Toboe’s mind. The pup thought.
“Well get use to it Toboe. I’m probably going to look sick all the time to you.”
“I heard your thoughts.” His ears went down and he whimpered. I had embarrassed him.
I hugged him to make him feel better. “It’s okay.”
“No body better think of anything bad about her.” Blue joked. “‘Cus she’ll hear it!”
“Hey.” Hige said. “You can go hunting with us now. You can hunt humans and we’ll hunt........well, whatever we want.................................By the way, when are we going hunting tonight? I’m hungry.”
“When aren’t you hungry?” Kiba asked.
The topic of hunting made me aware of something. I had no desire to kill. “I always thought that once you become a vampire, that you automatically have the urge to hunt and kill humans, but I don’t feel any urge to kill. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I think something is wrong with me.”
“Nothing is wrong with you.” I heard Darren say. He had stuck his head in the door. “Come on out here.”
I exited the little bedroom and went into the kitchen, with the wolves trailing behind me. I leaned against the wall near Lestat. “So you’re one of us now?” He asked. He then addressed Darren. “You made a fine vampire Hayes. I didn’t know you had it in you.”
“Don’t worry about not being hungry.” Marius said. You’ll begin to thirst in a few hours. The thirst never comes the moment you wake up.
“We’re going to have to leave this god forsaken city.” Purity said. “Merrick could do just fine drinking only vampire blood, but it wouldn’t seem right. She needs to learn to hunt and kill.”
Purity looked at me and gave me a wicked smile. “I guess that means we’ve got a new runt to mess with now.”
I looked at Darren. “I have this funny feeling that you made me into a vampire just so they won’t bother you anymore.”
“Don’t worry,” Purity said. “I’m still hanging Darren off the fire escape.”
I chuckled and Darren shook his head disappointed. “Well, if you’re planning on leaving the city, where should we go?” I asked.
“Well....” Marius started. “It seems that most of the U.S. population has been eliminated. I do know that there are a few parts of California that are still richly populated.”
“Any place else?” I asked.
“Well all the state near by are uninhabited at this point. I think California might be the only place left with people in it.”
“I guess we have no other choice, but to go to Cali.” Darren said.
Kiba said. The whole pack began howling joyfully.
I slept in a coffin for the first time when the sun rose. Darren told me I wouldn’t be sleeping in a coffin all the time, that once I got stronger I wouldn’t need it that much. I would be able to sleep in a bed, so long as the curtains were drawn. The next night, we made our way to California. The others has the ability to fly. I wasn’t able to yet, so Darren carried me. The others carried the wolves. We took root in Santa Barbara and found a big abandoned house to live in. I got to hunt the first night we were there. It was excited and I couldn’t believe how strong I had become. The wolves and coven were now my family. I finally found a place where I belonged and I was finally at peace.
