That also makes him the boss of quite a few students here, and no one likes to see their boss. ever.

I'm so very confused by this "ShinRa" corperation. What do they do exactly?

They are supposed to simply be a producer of electric energy. However, they've expanded to include a space program and biological testing and almost anything imaginable. They are extremely rich and even more powerful because they have a monopoly over almost every market they're involved in. The even bigger problem with them is their total disregard for who they stomp on in gaining more power for themselves, including smaller businesses, their employees, the environment, and who knows what else.
