I knew there was a reason I liked you. You're a fellow over-analyst!
Good question though. I think a HUGE factor would be the weather, as in SADS. I know I and many of my friends are affected by the weatehr and the atmospheric pressure. as well, if you go to bed stressed as hell, your mind tends to wander enough to resolve or attempt to, but if it hasn't the lack of said resolution may be the first thing you wake up to and the inherent annoyance.

as far as REM, on the few occasions I wake up fully rested and feeling like a million bucks, I rarely have gotten a full night's sleep.

all that to say....mayeb others can throw some more ideas on.

I hope you feel better soon.
Medidtationn does help by simply sweeping themind and sorting its dust and neutralizing its dirty winds.

Might want to try positive affirmations BEFORE bed until you are feeling positively HAPPY to overflowing. Then when you wake up (REM dream state), you are more likely to be in THAT positive state.

Also, use the mornings to manifest your reality...

It isn't easy to wake up every day feeling happy, positive... I have found myself most often in the last few months waking up in neutral - and that started with "I don't wanna... "

Well, being a happy optimistic person with these touches of distressed states, I find that the more happy I have around the more my got up and went stays with me!

I usually spend the time relaxing with a good book (many interesting situation dreams come from this) a cup of tea and some classical music.

Yes, diet does help in this respect. As soon as I go by the wayside from a good solid meal my body more than hiccups...

And my meditation time of day is in the morning waking up to the sun and a new day!

I find that the more tired I am the night before, the more happy and refreshed I feel the next morning. Now when I say tired, I'm not talking about putting off your bed time so you feel more tired, I mean physically tired.

My suggestion would be to do some kind of physical exercise for a few hours before going to bed, so that when you do hit the pillow, you're not tossing and turning in order to fall asleep, but rather you fall asleep easily and wake up totally refreshed an din a good/content mood.

Wow I should really take some of my own advise here :-) Last night I went to the Super-Ex with Bast-danica and I was exhausted when I got home. I actually went to bed later than usual (was getting up for work the next day at usual time) and this morning I woke up.... happy to be alive!
