I need to get around to Christmas shopping too. =( My exams are before the holidays this year, instead of after (which I'm used to) so I don't even have time to do all that, or THINK about doing all that. Blah.
I know how you feel about the family thing. I'm pretty distant from all my relatives (as most of them are in Asia, and I've only seen them TWICE, remembering only the most recent time) and it's really awkward when they call too. They're nice of course, but there's always that weird silence and forced delight at everything that IS said. T___T
Exams... before... holiday? That's blasphemous! I'm terribly sorry about that. I'm also used to my midyear exams being after the holidays (try February). But hey, at least you start the holiday worry-free! :D Unless you agonize over grades like I do... shameful trait of mine.
Nearly all of my dad's relatives are now OUT of Asia. I call this a "tsunami". Interaction is now inevitable. But none of them live in my state, just my region of America (northeast). I'm the Bitter Relative since many of my relatives speak/understand the mother language while I speak English (then a little Spanish and a little more Japanese). I've become the queen of the cold shoulder and haughtiness. At least you act nice. I'm a terrible person. =/
I think the teachers believe that if they put the exams earlier, no one would stress over it during the holidays, and can relax to the fullest. But who really studies during the holidays anyway?
To my family, I'm the terribly shy one, mostly because I just don't know what to say. Also, my Chinese isn't all that spectacular, so communication's difficult too, on my side same as you. ^^;;
That's probably why your tests are before break. I'd rather worry about my test grades than worry about taking them.
Do your relatives judge you too quickly? Because one time my aunt stared at me for a good awkward time during dinner and then said, "Your face is rounder. Did you gain weight?" The bitch.
