I don't think the GOP should "return to its base" so much as change and enlarge the focus on its base. It seemed there were too many who went by the Rove playbook (which may have worked in 2004 but you can't fool people twice) by zeroing in on those who react with "OMG! The Gays are coming! The Gays are coming!" and other such polarizing issues.
They need to widen focus to that mass of people just to the right of center who care more about what's happening in the halls of power than in the bedroom. That's the voters who turned out for Reagan, and who Clinton suckered twice.
While the Democrats have no plan for Iraq, W. didn't have much of one except for "more of the same" which didn't look palatable either. The best thing from all this may have been Rumsfield's resignation. Perhaps the next person will have a better approach to getting Iraq as stable as possible so we can extract ourselves from this mess with minimal hardship.
