whooo-boy! Just checked my Duke e-mail, and boy has Psi U changed! I really am shocked. You know, by last year it really wasn't the same Psi U that I joined at all, and that makes me sad.

How so? I'm actually very curious, because I thought we were close to what it was my freshmen year. I really did not like what we become my sophmore year. The best year in Psi U for me was my Junior year mostly because of the closeness of the brothers. As for the smoking/drinking, people did much worse than smoke hookah before.

IMHO the type of people completely changed between sophomore and junior years. They were/are fun, quirky people, but instead of the wide range of interests/majors/personalities Psi U had before, we suddenly became VERY pigeonholed as an engineering frat. I missed the variety. As for the current issue at hand, it just bothers me that (a) the smoking has become more widespread and (b) we're even considering advertising this to the university community. I get that crazier things have happened in section, and yeah they were entertaining, but those things aren't things I want posted on flyers around campus. That would be potentially career damaging. If professors that I worked with knew that I was in this fraternity and saw these flyers, what would they think? I get that hookah is perfectly legal, but so is fucking a dead chicken. Neither are images I'd like to be presented to the general public.

I really saw that changing between my freshman year and my senior year. It's not really just the majors, it's the interests and the unwillingness to be more open and accepting. It can swing back, though. It's been more closed like this before. People have to want it and care about it and pay attention to the need. People forget that it's not just about being close--there has to be a reason to join, to be welcomed in, no matter who are you or what you like, so long as you can make a good brother.

I do agree with the engineer fraternity comment, but we are actually branching out from that. The people who are doing most of the recruitment are not engineers and thus the people we have hanging around us right now are not engineers. I do agree that we are not as open, but I think its because we have grown a bit larger and also people formed cliques and are unwilling to climb out of the box.
