The day after my last post, a grad student was shot on her first day on campus here. And she was shot in a good neighborhood at a relatively early hour.
When outside people come in, security actually exists. When outside famous people come in, security gets INSANE. I dunno, I guess it may be comparable to UPenn? Stuff still gets hosted at Penn, right? Although we've got a Penn student here (and she's originally from Baltimore, which isn't exactly a bed of roses either) and she's horrified.
I will have to tell Will - he just started a masters in forestry there. I think he's reasonably good at taking care of himself but it's pretty unnerving to read your reports.
Forestry? He must be having fun - those guys are all nutty partiers! I honestly don't even know what advice I can give - everyone lies their asses off about New Haven until you're actually stuck on campus, at which point they tell you to not bring a car, not go anywhere after dark, be constantly be aware of who's around you, don't talk to bums, etc etc. Forestry is in the "good" part of town. Grad student was also shot in "good" part of town, so I don't know what to say. The med school (where I work) is the worst side of town, and all kinds of crazy shit goes down there. If he's already here, then I'm sure he's already well aware of this, as we get e-mails from the police chief every week about the crazy shit that goes down here. What's funny is that the chief always makes excuses in said e-mails - ie. robberies at gunpoint are up because the new students are moving in, robberies are up because it's summer and there's more daylight and more activity and things to rob, there's more robberies because it's winter and it's dark out
