My supervisor called my yesterday (while I was right in the middle of Scarlet Monestary Armory with a P.U.G....lol) to ask me if I would take on a sixth class for the upcoming year. It seems that with the new contract the union president, who happens to be a fellow English teacher, is going to be allowed to teach only 3/5 of his schedule meaning that 2 of the classes intended as his are now without a teacher. Since I will be teaching seniors this year and the two teacher-less classes are also senior classes, I am apparently the logical choice to take one of them.
The downside is that both sections that the guy wants to give up are ICS and I was looking forward to a year without having to deal with ICS. There is also the fact that this would mean at least 20 more students to deal with, and an additional class of papers to grade all year long. This is also my first time teaching seniors.
The upside is that by agreeing to essentially overload myself I will be paid an additional 1/5 of my salary on top of my normal salary. That's kind of hard to turn down, ya know?
So I agreed. I may be over-stressed, exhausted and bald by the time June gets here but it'll be worth it...I think.
So that was yesterday. Today, I get an email from the guy I'm taking a class from in which he lists all the books I should read before September in order to teach ENGLISH IV HONORS! WTF?!?!? I was told I was getting an ICS class...not HONORS!!! That's a whole other ball game that I'm not sure I'm up for just yet, not with teaching an entirely new prep in the first place. I don't think taking on a whole new schedule (aside from the one journalism class) AND a sixth class AND honors is such a grand idea. I may be over-stressed, exhausted, bald and DEAD by June if I do that.
Needless to say I'm calling my supervisor first thing tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!
