Does he know (or suspect) the reason that you cancelled your trip? That would go a long way toward explaining this attitude.

I don't think that he knows. I've been pretty vague about it with him. He's never been big on details. He might want to push me to visit someone that I have an interest in. That could help to dissipate some of his guilt.
