What's past is food for thought

An entry for LJ Idol, week 6: "Food memory."

They stretch back so far now. 35 years, she realizes. 35 years ago was the first time she remembers that tall man with the shiny head and big, big smile reaching over the counter, one little shortbread cookie with a pool of chocolate on top. That paragraph of her standing over the bowl is so especially nice - you beautifully sum up where her life is now! And I love the image of taking things with one hand because the other is holding the grandmother's hand.

My parents stayed happily married until Dad died, so I didn't have to experience the kind of separation you did. But some of my happiest childhood memories are of his cooking the family meals, with us kids helping to varying degrees.

I can still remember the taste of his pasta sauces... even though he never made them the same way twice.
