For about...8 years now, I have played this little game called Dungeons & Dragons, and I'm tempted to yet again try and run a game.
Alas, my history of running games is shitty at best.

1) Only invite people who have the means to attend. People always want to play, but the ability to do so is another matter.
2) Even if out of a mod, make sure to enforce "Page 8" to the players and mete out justice and circumstances with a rational and even hand.
3) Punish those who don't play.

the current issue , number 134 (page 57)
has some advice for adding a new player to an established group.
This doesn't cover running a successful long term game as such ,
but might be worth a look.
