Wel, I've encountered spectacularly crappy (and dishonest) social workers and doctors and such, but I agree, it just sounds like a poorly researched book. And last I checked, social workers are so careful about not leading a child when questioning them that the child can actually be left in more danger because of it. A woman I know very nearly fled to Canada with her four-year-old daughter because of child abuse (by the father) that the daughter had reported to several people, but inconsiderately failed to spell out to either a social worker or a police officer.
By the way, I find that I notice small details more with audiobooks, and that something which annoys me will usually annoy me more. Unless you're a fairly slow reader, audiobooks go on for a lot longer, for starters.
When I finished My Sister's Keeper, I was so frustrated with the horrible characters and the stupid plot that I swore I'd never pick up another one of Picoult's books.
