This warms the cockles of my jaded heart.

hmm, while proofreading, I realized that the tone of this was a little flat and maybe I hadn't quite reopened my own heart while writing this. So, I'll just transfer the warmth to you, then.

Sure ... so back in 2005 I had a surplus of vacation time and was trying to figure out what to do with it. A friend recommended this group and I eventually decided to sign up with them. Flew down to Mississippi for a few days of extremely satisfying volunteer work.

I have stayed on their email list and sometimes kicked them a few dollars in donations. But while they kept doing projects I wound up doing other vacations. When Sandy hit though I started to realize that I could go down to New York on spare weekends. I checked in with them to see if they needed help and they said "so long as you can fend for yourself with food and lodging, then yes."

So I headed down via bus and stayed with friends in Brooklyn then went back on Thanksgiving and stayed in OlderSister's studio in Manhattan. I am aiming to recruit more friends for another weekend in december or january but want to wait until after they have secured volunteer housing.
