thanks for this post. paris was the first european city i traveled to (also when i was 19) and this really brought back some of the awe and amazement i felt when i first arrived. living in california means we have easy access to hawaii which i love, but i do miss the relative proximity to europe. and i now have glass candy to give a shot; i've got some love for disco-inflected music (ie kompakt) so i've got high hopes.
I assume you already know about all of the electro-glitch stuff that comes out of the Pretty Lights label? Not 'disco' per se, but there's a nice 70s soul vibe in a lot of that stuff that is more my speed.
Awesomeness. I had a good bunch of surreal live-show experiences in France, although they are mostly in the context of non-French garage bands playing covers of English-language punk in a grubby bar by the train station in small-town Normandy.
I need to get back to Paris some spring and reclaim it as one of my favorite places. (My most recent experience with it involved December rains and divorce, so that's a bit of a downer.)
I really like that punk bar image juxtaposed with your profile pic. Also, I'm a hearty supporter of the idea of reclaiming places haunted by sad memories.
